Polystyrene
(High-Impact
Polystyrene)
High-Impact Polystyrene is a low-cost plastic material that is easy
to machine and fabricate. It is often specified for low-strength
structural applications when impact resistance is required. Because
of its dimensional stability and ease of painting and gluing, HIPS
is frequently chosen for machining pre-production prototypes. In
its natural (translucent white) form, HIPS is FDA-compliant for
use in food-processing applications, but it is also available in
custom colors.
Key Properties
Resistance to mineral oils, organic acids, and alkalis
Good electrical properties
Light weight
High rigidity and hardness
Excellent aesthetic qualities
Typical Applications
Machined prototypes
Low-strength structural components
Housings
